    Commentary on “Daddy”
In the poem “Daddy”, Sylvia Plath describes her true feelings about her deceased father. Throughout the poem, many instances illustrate a great feeling of hatred toward Plath’s father. At the beginning, Plath expresses her fears of her father and how he treated her. Plath also conveys her outlook on the wars being fought in Germany. This poem also explains Plath’s life since her father and how it has related to him.
Plath compares her father’s one grey toe, which was injured, to the amputation of his leg in 1940. Plath compares the wars in Germany with the many conflicts in her life. Plath also compares her father with the Germans.
Plath confesses her feelings about men and death and how they are related. In this poem, Plath uses confessional poetry. Plath’s poems are influenced by the death of her father and by the divorce from her husband.
Sylvia wrote this poem about the many struggles in her life, that she felt was caused by either her father or her husband. All of these struggles left her with a feeling of insignificance toward men, primarily her father. By writing this poem, Plath is releasing her inner hostility as a means of closure for the treatment she has received.
